After reveling the new smaller Trailblazer yesterday, somehow Jalopnik forgot to show how deep the crossover stupidity goes. Behold the Buick Encore GX. “But Buick already has the Encore” y ou say? Nope. This has nothing to do with the current one. Its a new platform shared with the Traileblazer ( I was wondering what was underpinning it when I read about it yesterday). Here’ s the fun part: this will slot above the current Encore but below the Envision. Insane. Buick says its about the size of a Jeep Compass, so its not big. No word yet on engines or anything, but expect it to start in the mid to high 20's and...I cant even talk about this anymore. Crossovers are officially a cancer in the automotive market. You can read more about it over at !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! .

They did on this article but agreed, unfortunately the crossover market has hit full stride....

But we need another mildly derpy smallish CUV with just a hint of faux floating C-pillar, there aren’t enough like that on the market right now.

Buick says its about the size of a Jeep Compass
That’s all I need to know. They will also sell more of these than Regal Tour’s.

Something looks familiar about the front of that Buick.
![]() 05/30/2019 at 11:05 |

This one is 2 inches longer than the other one and 1 inch shorter than the other other one. There is plenty of space in the market for a new CUV, ughhhhh.

oooh he chonk
Whenever I see an Encore, I marvel at just how
bad
it looks. Why is it so tall? It’d look okay if it were about two feet longer with the just and aspect ratio stretch.

It’s like a weird attempt at out-nicheing the Germans, except these niches don’t really exist.
This thing will be 75% fleet sales I betcha.

I'm getting Opel vibes from this thing despite GM getting rid of them.
![]() 05/30/2019 at 11:18 |

It looks fine to me but it doesn’t look any bigger than the regular Encore. I suspect it looks bigger in person.

I can’t wait to rent this from the whatever rent-a-car at O’hare in a few months!

It’s actually pretty handsome for a CUV imo. If people don’t want CUVs then they need to actually buy the small cars instead.

I dont think half of these models will be around in 5-7 years.
![]() 05/30/2019 at 11:37 |

These will sell to the old people that drive Encores, but were wanting a CR-V.
![]() 05/30/2019 at 11:38 |

This will probably kill the TourX.
![]() 05/30/2019 at 11:40 |

I suppose that could be the niche. A Buick CRAV4
![]() 05/30/2019 at 11:40 |
|
Its Opel-ness.
![]() 05/30/2019 at 11:41 |

Its awkward cute, and not in a good way. Its proportions are off. Like how most sedan versions of hatches look weird.

We don’t have the Encore GX, we get the Encore, Mokka here.
I think we already have an equivalent to the Encore GX, the Crossland X, then the larger Grandland X.
Mokka X
Crossland X
Grandland X

Most of their lineup is Opel transplants. Nothing about them is unique.
![]() 05/30/2019 at 12:01 |
|
That’s the problem with this and these other in between crossovers: they aren’t much bigger than the ones above and below them.
![]() 05/30/2019 at 12:04 |
|
Exactly. Because these crossovers usually have the same or worse interior dimensions than the cars they are based on.
![]() 05/30/2019 at 12:09 |
|
Yea we don’t get the Crossland. That thing is hideous btw. It's a terrible mashup of a van, an move and a crossover. I think the Grandland is our Envision? I could be wrong though.
![]() 05/30/2019 at 12:38 |

The Vauxhall Grandland X
and the Ford Kuga (I think your, Escape)
But the main players in the SUV market are VW, Audi, SEAT, Skoda, Land Rover, Renault, BMW, etc...
![]() 05/30/2019 at 12:50 |
|
Lets hope so. All these are, are just tall hatchbacks
![]() 05/30/2019 at 12:59 |

The Crossland is based on the Peugeot 2008 and replaces the Meriva MPV so it makes sense that it looks a lot like a van. The Grandland is based on the Peugeot 3008 so its a lot smaller than the Envision and fwd only.
Those shouldn’t come to America as they are Opel-Peugeot products and not GM ones, the Mokka will probably not be replaced and the US gets a Buick version of the new Chinese made Chevrolet Trax:
![]() 05/30/2019 at 13:00 |

They won’t have Opel transplants anymore as those will now be Peugeot’s, the new Buick’s are Chinese.

Like the Corsa saloon.
Fiesta saloon
Though rarely is something weirder in coupe form than saloon form. Take the Toyota Yaris,
make it a saloon and call it the Echo.
now make it a coupe.
It’s so ugly and weirdly proportioned.
![]() 05/30/2019 at 14:51 |
|
Yeah the Kuga is our Escape. That Grandland X has CRV vibes to it.
![]() 05/30/2019 at 18:50 |

The TourX is already a zombie anyway so this makes sense for GM.

I’m surprised there’s enough space between the Encore and Envision to even slide another model, I had no idea there was another size class in between subcompact and compact, but, I guess, necessity is the mother of invention.
And I hate when automakers use the same model name across different cars, they really couldn’t come up with another “E” word besides Encore?

they really couldn’t come up with another “E” word besides Encore?
Yea. I would've suggested Erroneous.

Enc ore GX will have a 155hp 1.3L turbo 3 cyl.

Really? That can’t be right. This would be like FCA equipping the 4 from the standard Fiat 500 in the Compass.
